There’s a lot of talk and anxiety amongst pre-med students regarding the importance of the MCAT. And much of that is understandable. Most medical schools consider the MCAT score to be approximately 40% of the application. A top score can compensate for other issues on the resume like a lower GPA, and similarly a poor score can tank the chances of somebody with a 4.0. One of the issues many pre-meds face when it comes to the MCAT is: where to start? Students are inundated with a seemingly never-ending list of potential resources to use and everyone seems to have conflicting recommendations on how to study. It can all be very nerve-racking and confusing. But with our guidance and expertise, it won’t be! We are experts at helping our students navigate this milieu.
Whether you are taking the MCAT for the first time or are re-taking the exam, you will work with a highly-qualified, well-trained MCAT tutor, from day one until your exam date, who will facilitate your customized one-on-one tutoring program and will help you reach your goal score.
Your tutor will work with you to create a personalized study plan based on their understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, as well as what resources you have access to, what resources you will most need, and what your work/school availability permits for your proposed test date. Many large test prep companies try to sell you a very expensive package of resources (or they strictly include it with tutoring hours); unfortunately, many of these resources you will never use, will never need to use, and oftentimes poorly prepare you for the style of the actual MCAT or the official practice AAMC materials. While a good set of content books is necessary to master the basics of the sciences, our tutors are trained to help you select the most essential resources that best mimic the MCAT style.
Once you have a firm study schedule in hand and know which resources you need to succeed, an experienced, savvy tutor can make all the difference in appreciating how to apply key test-taking and time-management/pacing strategies, understanding challenging concepts, learning how to crack the code that is the MCAT-style passage, and keep you motivated throughout the long prep process (we like to think of our tutors as part teacher/instructor and also part coach/motivator). We encourage our tutors to focus on general and section-specific strategies during the first tutoring session, and to make it a point to emphasize how to apply these strategies throughout all tutoring sessions. After the first session, however, the bulk of the time spent will be on improving your comprehension of any weak content areas and then directly applying those concepts to questions and passages, doing all of this in accordance with your unique learning style. The old adage of “practice makes perfect” really applies to the MCAT. One of the biggest mistakes students make is purely focusing on reviewing material. While this is important, once you understand the material sufficiently, you need to practice, practice, and practice on passages. Our talented tutors will be instrumental in helping you break down the passages to extract out the important and relevant information, and then show you how to apply this passage-based information to the questions, incorporating your understanding of the fundamental content where appropriate.
We offer both online/virtual tutoring and in-person tutoring. We strive to match you with the best possible fit out of our list of highly skilled tutors.
